Default How much time per day when in residency?

Does it often or always take so much time like 12 or even 24 hour shifts?
Is it possible to stay under 8 hours per day? Or maybe only at specific residencies?

It can be possible during some electives but I would not count on that. During regular rotations (ICU, wards, ER) its not possible

Is it going last for all 6 years if residency takes so? I plan to go for surgery, so what time tables most likely will it take for the lasting years?

Some more questions:
1) Is there an observership for a month without taking steps?
2) So when do I expect to switch to some high-paying salaries? Is it when in fellowship? If I get lucky and finish all 6 years in general surgery, what's next regarding to salary?
3) Really, when do you get to sleep? 12 hours a day without day-offs sound like #&^@ to me

4) How many patients are you dealing with throughout a day when in Residency or during internship? How many fixed under your name patients and how many calls per day to expect?

5) I guess It's impossible to take STEP 3 without being in a US hospital, which means J1 visa, right? Can I possibly do all the steps while on visitors' visa? I guess I can...
but better tell me I can come with J1 and later convert it to H1 without having to come back and stop studies or having to serve 2 year "Stay home" policy! ^)

Andrey, try European counties, in some residents work less then 40 hours per week. Or you always have an option don't go anywhere. I don't want to be sarcastic but it is sounds like you want to make big $$$$ but not work too much. Sorry to disapiont you but even after residency docs in US work on average 55-56 hours per week (numbers are going down from last time survey was sent). For most specialties you work some weekends and have a calls also. Even for internal medicine you need to do internship. So, make up your mind if you realy want to do it.
